Author Interview with Lisa Becker

About clutch: a novel
Clutch is the laugh-out-loud, chick lit story that chronicles the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson, a single purse designer, who goes through a series of unsuccessful romantic relationships she compares to various styles of handbags – the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag” single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc. With her best friend, bar owner Mike by her side, the overly-accommodating Caroline drinks Chardonnay, puts her heart on the line, endures her share of unworthy suitors and finds the courage to stand up for the handbag style that embodies what she ultimately wants – the “Clutch” or someone to hold onto.

When did you first start writing? And when were you first published?
My husband and I met online on a popular dating website more than 15 years ago. After we married, I was recalling some of the hilarious experiences that I had with both traditional and online dating. I decided to capture some of them in writing and from there, a novel emerged – Click: An Online Love Story . The book released in 2011. Since then, I’ve released two follow ups in the series, Double Click and Right Click, as well as my newest book, clutch: a novel

What is it about 'chick lit' / 'romance' that appeals to you the most? Do you read other genres?
I’ve always been a sucker for a good love story and a happy ending. While I do read other genres including mysteries, contemporary women’s fiction and general fiction, I always come back to my favorites.

Can you tell us a little about your latest release?

What inspired you to write it?
When I was writing the Click Trilogy, I was obsessed with NCIS reruns and would have the show on in the background as I wrote. There was an episode when one of the characters mentioned that men were like purses – something useless to hang on a woman’s arm. I started thinking about how men are like handbags and the idea grew from there. The book actually started out as a screenplay that was optioned by a production company housed at one of the major movie studios summer 2014. Unfortunately, it fell out of development. I was eager to have this fun story with some of my favorite characters told, so I turned it into a short novel earlier this year.

If it was made into a film, who would you cast as the main characters?
Caroline is a smart and driven business woman, who oozes Southern charm but has a ton of insecurities. I think Eloise Mumford, who played Kate in 50 Shades of Grey, would be an excellent choice.

What is your favourite book that made it to the big screen?
I have to go with a classic – To Kill a Mockingbird.

What was the last book you read and would you recommend it?
I just finished Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover and loved it. I immediately fell in love with the back and forth narrative from present to past and thought the characters were well developed, realistic and likeable. I was rooting for a happy ending the entire time.

Where do you currently write? And where would be your dream writing location?
I sit in my home office at a HP desktop computer with a really big screen. My eyes grow tired pretty easily in my old age;) And, I like to write with the television on in the background. In the past, I was focused on Law & Order and NCIS reruns. Now, I can’t seem to get enough of NCIS Los Angeles. I guess there’s a part of me that likes to see justice served.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I’ve never had a cup of coffee in my life…ever!

Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
I live in a small beach community just south of the Los Angeles airport called Manhattan Beach. The city is less than 4 square miles and boasts 80 acres of park land.

Who would play you in the movie about your life?
I think a movie about my life would be rather dull. I'm honestly not that interesting of a person. But I suppose Casey Wilson would be my top choice. I think she’s adorable, funny, charismatic and real. She’d probably be best able to inject some life into an otherwise boring story about me.

What are your (writing) plans for the future?
I have several other screenplays that I’ve written. If I cannot generate interest within the entertainment industry, I will start converting them into novels as well.

Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.
My dream would be to have a movie made from either one of my books or an original screenplay. So if you happen to be a well-to-do movie producer, let me know.

Name one of your all time favourite songs.
Got to Get You Into My Life by The Beatles. (Told you I was a sucker for a happy ending.)
