2014 Debut Authors Bash Tour with Kimberley Wheaton

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
Tortured Souls is book one in The Orion Circle, a series of standalone YA paranormal romance novels. They are about a group of teens who are part of a secret society of supernatural hunters.

What inspired you to write it?
I have a love for all things paranormal having grown up reading ghost stories and watching Scooby Doo to excess. I thought it would be fun to have a group of teenagers hunting down the things that go bump in the night.

How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
I emailed graphic artist Amanda Matthews and all but begged her to make the cover. She also designed the covers for Shadow Fire and Stolen Moon. Though I have to say, I love the Tortured Souls cover the best so far. Amanda managed to capture main character Kacie perfectly.

If it was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
Nicola Peltz as Kacie
Lucas Till as Logan
Liam James as Daniel
Nathan Kress as Carl
Chloe Grace Moretz as Rebecca
Elizabeth Gillies as Raven

What is it about this genre that appeals to you so much?
The unknown. Sometimes life can be dreadfully mundane. Add in a ghost, a vampire, magic, etc. and things are suddenly much more interesting. I like urban fantasy because the fantastic takes place in our world right under our noses.

What made you want to become an author?
I've always loved writing. There are so many ideas swimming around in my head. I finally reached a point where I was afraid my brain would explode if I didn't start writing some novels.

How do you come up with character names?
Some names just come to me, others take time. Kacie started out as Amber but halfway through I realized she should be named after Kassandra the Trojan Oracle. I used a Celtic baby name site for one of my male leads. The teen boy next door to me named two of the characters in Stolen Moon. In my fantasy romance novels, I use a few Celtic and Norse names. I'm rather fond of mythology so expect to see names from different cultures sprinkled throughout my novels.

Name one of your all-time favourite books?
The Complete Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales

Who, or what, inspires you?
Everything. I'm a people watcher. I'm a daydreamer. I'm an avid gamer. Most of my inspiration comes from my daydreams which can be influenced by day to day life.

Where is your favourite place to write?
On my laptop in bed, propped up by several pillows.

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
It's rare for me to like a movie if I've read the book first. So I'm going to pick Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I think it's one of the only movies I enjoyed even after reading the book. Seeing that fantasy world on the big screen was amazing.

Name two of your favourite authors.
Dean Koontz and David Eddings

If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?

Lewis Carroll— that would be BYOB, and I expect him to share. Edgar Allen Poe— he's the king of spooky. Dr. Seuss— for the sparkling dinner conversation.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I love to sing. In fact I need to sing to stay sane. Morning, noon, night, doesn't matter. Sometimes I don't even realize I'm doing it— a person at Target told me I have a beautiful voice. I was a tad embarrassed that I was singing in public without noticing.

Who would play you in the movie about your life?
Nicole Kidman

Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
Well, I live in San Antonio, so the most interesting thing here is definitely the Alamo. I swear you can almost feel the energy when standing inside the mission. When there are no crowds and it's quiet, it's one of the most amazing places around.

What are your (writing) plans for the future?
I'm working on:
the second book in The Orion Circle
a new adult romantic suspense — Elaborate Lies
Book 1.5 of the Light Chronicles
a YA urban fantasy romance — Bitter Envy

Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.
African Safari

Favourite myth / fairytale?
Oh, there are so many. I'm so into mythology and fairy tales. Fitcher's Bird in The Complete Brothers Grimm is one of my favorites.

Who did you want to be when you were a kid?
Princess Leia or Maid Marian
