Interview with Anne Marsh

Wicked Sexy
Uniformly Hot!
By: Anne Marsh
Releasing June 17th, 2014
Harlequin Blaze

Too sexy to resist?
Danielle Andrews was supposed to be on her honeymoon. Instead, she's back on Discovery Island licking her wounds and running for shelter when she sees Daeg Ross coming her way. Years ago, on this very beach, Dani started something with the special ops aviation rescue swimmer. But she refuses to be tempted by the wickedly hot military hunk again.
Daeg Ross is used to jumping into treacherous waters. But his feelings for relationship-shy Dani are a whole new type of risk. They are volatile—and irresistible. When their lives are threatened by the invading winds and endless rain of a tropical storm, Daeg and Dani are forced to take shelter and ride out a wild night. Together, will they sink…or swim?

Author Interview
Do dreams ever inspire your writing? What did you last dream about?
Nope. The last dream I had was a post-apocalyptic nightmare where I was a) trying to pack the car and b) lost my son. I prefer happy endings.

When did you first start writing? And when were you first published?
I first started writing seriously for publication when I was laid off from my technical writing job at Pixar. I’d always said “Oooh! I want to write a romance novel someday!” I’d taken a couple of writing classes at Pixar (and discovered that I will never, ever make a good screenwriter). And hey… I sat next to both the rats and the writers for Ratatouille. When I got laid off, I went home, bawled my eyes out, ate an enormous bag of M&Ms and started writing the book that became THE HUNT. I put in all my favorite parts because I was feeling sad: an erotic hunt, shape shifters, and some slightly kink sex games. I sold that book about eighteen months after I got laid off. Conveniently, I’d already gone through two more jobs at that point ;)

What is it about 'chick lit' that appeals to you the most? Do you read other genres?
I adore chick lit as you can probably tell from my Goodreads lists. Sophie Kinsella, Wendy Holden and Hester Browne are on my “must re-read at least every three months” list. I read plenty of different genres, though: paranormal and contemporary romance are huge favorites of mine, as are YA and anything post-apocalyptic.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?

What inspired you to write it?
I was flipping through a Victoria’s Secret catalog (because that’s my secret fitness plan—if I look at enough pictures, they’ll rub off on me, right?) and I spotted this itty-bitty white crochet bikini. While my wearing it would have been a tragedy, I started trying to imagine the kind of woman who would be happy wearing it… and met my heroine, Dani. Dani’s just come off a bad relationship and she’s trying to be bigger and bolder in the way she lives her life. She’s ready to bring a few fantasies to life—so she was the perfect woman for my fantasy swimsuit.

Have you ever spotted anyone reading your books anywhere?
Nope! Although I have spotted a couple of copies on the laundry room shelf in the local senior community…

Who designs your covers?
It depends. Kim Killion of Hot Damn Designs has done all of my eKensington and self-published covers. I don’t know who did the Kensington and Harlequin covers, although my Harlequin editor assures me that she attended the photoshoot for WICKED SEXY and the model was as fine in real life as he is on the cover.

If your latest book was made into a film, who would you cast?
The last movie I saw was Despicable Me 2. I’m not much of a film person.

What's your favourite Chick Lit book that made it to the big screen?

Have they made Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic series into a movie? That would be tons of fun.
Yes, Anne! They have... and it is :)

What were the last two books you read?
Amy Plum’s AFTER THE END and Susann Cokal’s THE KINGDOM OF LITTLE WOUNDS.

Name one female author who you think deserves to be better known.
Lynn Viehl recently mentioned on her blog that her publisher had declined to pick up any more of her DISENCHANTED & CO books. Since I’m positively dying after the cliffhanger ending of book two, I’m voting for Lynn. We need more DISENCHANTED books stat!

Where do you write?
On the couch. If I’m feeling really professional, I write on the couch in my office. I’ve also been known to write on the train, the bus, waiting to pick my kids up from religion class, in the car, on the beach and (on one memorable occasion) the bathroom floor of a Tahitian bungalow.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? And did you follow the dream?
I waffled between social worker and fashion designer, although I believe I also had a brief love affair with the idea of being a U.N. translator. Instead, I went to college and majored in English. That seems to have worked out well enough.

In the movie of your life, who would play you?
Can you recommend a nerdy librarian look-alike? In flip-flops? Because that would be me.

Speed Round...
Top drink to make you tipsy?
I don’t drink, so anything with alcohol in it would certainly do the job!
Shopaholic or shopadon't? Shopaholic if it’s online—otherwise, shopadont!
Sky high heels or closer to the ground? Flip-flops or sneakers all the way!
E.L. James or Jilly Cooper? Neither. But now I know who Jilly Cooper is ☺
Cry baby or tough cookie? Tough cookie
Exotic beach or enchanted forest?  Beach, beach, beach! I’m starting a club to run off to Bora Bora tomorrow.

After ten years of graduate school and too many degrees, Anne Marsh escaped to become a technical writer. When not planted firmly in front of the laptop translating Engineer into English, Anne enjoys gardening, running (even if it’s just to the 7-11 for slurpees), and reading books curled up with her kids. The best part of writing romance, however, is finally being able to answer the question: “So… what do you do with a PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures?” She lives in Northern California with her husband, two kids and four cats.
