H is for Handmaid's Tale #AtoZChallenge

H is for (The) Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Whilst studying A'level English literature, I was assigned to read this unusual book by an author I'd never even heard of at the time. After reading the likes of Shakespeare and Jane Eyre, I figured I was in for something modern and boring. Boy was I wrong! It instantly became one of my all time favourite novels. I couldn't put it down. Maybe it was because it was so totally different from anything I'd ever read, I don't know. But there was something so utterly intriguing about it. If you've never had the pleasure of reading this book, then go get it... like now. Seriously... it's AMAZING! It was also made into a movie back in 1990, which I've watched a couple of times but it's lacking something as is often the case with movie adaptations. However, it does feature Aidan Quinn and he's ALWAYS worth a look ;) The main character was played by the late Natasha Richardson and it also starred Faye Dunaway, Robert Duvall and Elizabeth McGovern (from Downton Abbey fame). Scroll down for the movie trailer (which is actually so bad, it's comical). Don't let it put you off the book though!

The Handmaid's Tale

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She has only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire - neither Offred's nor that of the two men on which her future hangs.
